A Day Of A Plastic Mold Maker’s Life

Most of us use CDs and DVDs almost every day, yet few people have any idea at all how they work. To make matters worse even less is known about the difference between a CD-ROM and CD-R. Understanding how different types of media work, what they cost and the advantages of each can be very valuable when deciding how to proceed with your next project. Asking for only what you’re familiar with may be comfortable, but isn’t necessarily the best use of the technology or your budget.

Lincoln Logs were invented by John Lloyd Wright in 1916. He was the son of the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1918 they were available for purchase. The logs have a notched end that will fit together to build the log structures. The original logs were made of 100% wood and were available in colors for specific items, i.e. roof pieces were green. The design of the logs were inspired from the basement of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. The name was derived from the instructions that were sent with each set on how to build the log cabin of Abraham Lincoln.

Injection Unit: this is where the plastic pellets are loaded into a hopper at the top of the injection unit. The pellets are fed into the main cylinder; this is where they are heated until they are liquefied. Inside the injection unit there is a screw which turns and mixes the plastic. Once this liquid plastic has reached the optimum for this product the injection process starts. The plastic is forced through a sprue and the pressure and speed are controlled by the screw or sometimes a ram depending on the type of machine.

Lower quantities (we call it short-runs) are mostly done with duplication. With this method the setup is much quicker, since all we will be using is a duplication tower. It is also more economical because of little to none setup cost. That is why companies are able to have a very low minimum (such as 10 or 50) with duplication. You will get your products much quicker, usually within a few days time, but you do pay a higher per unit price for each disc.

Throughout the process, Frank continued to look for a material that would be strong enough to withstand a tremendous amount of force, but durable enough not to crack or break. It was during this process that some early models were sent out to different professional teams. And, to his surprise, Frank was contacted by the Detroit Red Wings. As a Michigan native, this was an incredible honor. Frank was actually able to meet with the equipment manager for the team. More amazing still is that the prototype being used by the players was not the final version of the product that Frank had envisioned. He was not aware that it had been sent to the teams until after the fact.
