Back in the 60’s when I was a teenager (yes, I once was a teenager), there was a bumper sticker that read “If you’re not part of the Solution, you’re part of the Problem”. I don’t think it was ever as popular as my favorite Texas bumper sticker “Secede!”, but it did make a point.
So how did I get here? This writing journey began about 20 years ago when Don Feigel, the editor of an amateur radio newsletter, asked if I could contribute some articles. I’m a professional electronics technician, so I was interested in the tech side, but the pieces quickly devolved into comedy. I found a character, earnest but not overly bright, who may not be far removed from my own. It’s been a merry downhill run ever since.
What does this mean for our Languages system? When babies learn to pronounce a word, they hear it again and again. When as a second or third grader they start to learn their time tables, they write them, hear them, say them again and again. If you tell a dog no enough times when he pees on your front porch, eventually he will learn not to do it. Repetition. Is it learning? Yes and no. Can my students write a good essay? They can write a well formatted essay. A good essay? I didn’t really have time to teach them to write a good essay; I was too worried about them learning the benchmarks. For the reading FCAT is the same. If a teacher spends nine months teaching something, unless you are falling asleep in class, or simply staying home to play your favorite game system, something will register.
Most return preparers are professional, honest and provide excellent service to clients. But keep all these points in mind when looking for a new preparer.
The decision to enroll in college is not an easy one. It is even more difficult if you have lost your job and you don’t have an extra $10,000 sitting in the bank to pay for it. If you are over 30 there are very few, if any, traditional scholarship opportunities available. Should you find one, you’d be competing against recent high school graduates for the academic scholarships. And don’t even kid yourself about the athletic scholarships.
Make all efforts to find out from other students and people whether the university actually delivers all it promises or whether the whole course is just eye wash.
Which means that more and more people are applying to LVN schools these days, making it much tougher than it used to be to get accepted into a program. Will new LVN schools start opening up? Yes, you can bank on it. If they don’t, America’s already critical nursing shortage will get much worse, and the government can’t let that happen. But until more schools start opening up, it’s best not to set your heart on one particular school. In fact, you should probably apply to several just to hedge your bets and be on the safe side.
Adults are starting, or returning to college in greater numbers than ever before. In years past, adults usually attended college only for career advancement or continuing education. And their employer probably paid the tuition. Now, however they are more than likely starting over in a new career after losing their jobs to financial cutbacks or the company simply went out of business.
